On Tuesday, August 13, the 2013 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour concluded the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club. Pine Needles, host the US Women’s Open in 1996, 2001, and 2007, is among the most well know golf courses in the southern US and a ideal setting for the final open major championship of the PKB Tour regular season. The event features a field of 76 players. The field is quite strong with 23 event champions from the 2013 season and 20 of the top 30 players on the 2013 PKBGT Order of Merit lists.
Shannon Brooks (Vienna, VA 2015) is golden!
In the Bell Division, Brooks carded three under par with a score of 68 to place first with a record-breaking five under par total score of 137. Jessica Spicer (Bahama, NC 2016) carded one over par with a score of 72 to place second with an even par total score of 142. Savannah Gowarty (Raleigh, NC 2015) carded two over par with a score of 73 to place third with two over par total score of 144.
In the Futures Division, Lena Capoccia (Bethesda, MD 2018) and Moon Cheong (Charlotte, NC 2017) both shot five over par total scores of 147 each. Capoccia won a one-hole sudden-death playoff to win the tournament. Kathryn Carson (Mooresville, NC 2017) shot four over par with a score of 75 to place third with a score of six over par total score of 148.
With their top-three finishes, Brooks, Spicer, Gowarty, Capoccia, Cheong, and Carson all received exemptions into the sixth major tournament of the season, the Tournament of Champions which is being held at Moss Creek Country Club (North Course) in Hilton Head Island, SC in September.
The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour is an initiative of the Triad Youth Golf Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation aimed at increasing learning and playing opportunities for youth golfers. Based out of Greensboro, North Carolina, the PKBGT offers low cost, nationally ranked girls’ golf tournaments designed to prepare junior girls’ golfers for high school and collegiate golf. The PKBGT is the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 330 members in 2012, 137 alumni in the collegiate ranks and 29 National Letter of Intent signees for fall 2013.
