It was another great day for golf today at Duke University Golf Club.\u00a0 The weather cooperated nicely despite the threat of early afternoon storms.\u00a0 Local members and staff agree that the course is in peak condition, especially around the fairways and greens.\u00a0 The greens in particular have been a big topic of conversation throughout the event, seeing as though they are among the fastest and most challenging the PKB Tour has seen all year.\u00a0 Putting from above the hole spelled danger for even the most experienced players in the field and very few, if any, escaped their round without a three-putt.\u00a0 Posting a solid round today was well-deserved considering the difficulty of chipping and putting around these fast greens.<\/p>\n

Those playing well today were not fazed at all by the green speed.\u00a0 Leading the senior division, the 2016 graduates, are Janie Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC 2016) and Morgan Mugnolo (Haymarket, VA 2016).\u00a0 Thomas and Mugnolo posted rounds of 81 and 87 respectively.\u00a0 The 2017 graduate division is lead by Mogie Adamchik, (Raleigh, NC 2017) who posted a round of 79.\u00a0 In second place is Stella Woo (Timonium, MD 2017) with an 84 after round one.\u00a0 The sophomores (2018) are in it to win it, and proved so far to be the most competitive grad year in the tournament.\u00a0 Leading the sophomores and also the RecruitPKB Level 1 are Lena Capoccia (Bethesda, MD 2018) and Diana Cristina Domenech (Richmond, VA 2018).\u00a0 Capoccia was 1-under through eight holes until an unfortunate bogey on hole nine caused her to drop to even.\u00a0 She did not let this setback slow her down and she continued to play well on the back to finish at an even par 72.\u00a0 Domenech also played consistently throughout her round and made very few mistakes.\u00a0 She finished round one at 1-over par 73, making four bogies but matching them with three birdies.<\/p>\n

In the freshman division, leading the way is Kendall Turner (Chesapeake, VA 2019) with a six-over 78.\u00a0 She had a bit of a rocky start to her round on the front nine, but shined on the back when she made three birdies and finished that nine at even par 36.\u00a0 Turner is also in second place in the RecruitPKB Level 2 by five shots.\u00a0 Currently in second among the 2019\u00a0 graduates by two strokes is Michelle Harn (Charlotte, NC 2019) with an opening round 80.\u00a0 In first and second place in the 2020 division are Nicole Adam (Pinehurst, NC 2020) and Melissa Meng (Blacksburg, VA 2020) with rounds of 80 and 85 respectively.\u00a0 Leading the 2021 graduates are Amanda Sambach (Davidson, NC 2021) and Bailey Davis (White Plains, MD 2021).\u00a0 Sambach, who is also leading the RecruitPKB Level 2, had a difficult start to the round when she bogied her first three holes.\u00a0 However, she played the remaining 15 holes at 2-under par and finished her round at a solid 1-over 73.\u00a0 Davis, in second place in the division by seven strokes, closed out round one with an 8-over par 80.<\/p>\n

Play will continue in the 54-hole event tomorrow and Monday with rounds two and three.\u00a0 The first and second place finishers in each graduation year will be recognized as well as two overall RecruitPKB Level 1 & Level 2 champions.\u00a0 RecruitPKB Level 1 is comprised of all 2016, 2017, and 2018 grad year players while RecruitPKB Level 2 is comprised of players in the 2019, 2020, and 2021 grad years.<\/p>\n

The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls\u2019 Golf Tour<\/a> is an initiative of the Triad Youth Golf Foundation<\/a>, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation aimed at increasing learning and playing opportunities for youth golfers.
