Nguyen comes from behind to win PKB Preview Va Classic

Nguyen captures Peggy Kirk Bell Virginia Classic

Nguyen comes from behind to claim title

Shenandoah Valley, Va. — The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour, traveled to Shenandoah Valley Golf Club this weekend to host the Virginia Classic. Twenty plus girls traveled to the Shenandoah Valley event, even St. Catherine’s, Ontario Canada was represented in the mix. Seeking refuge in the Mountain’s from the week’s long storms, the conditions were damp, but refreshing. Golf action for the weekend featured Bryana Nguyen from Columbia, MD who made up a three shot deficit in the final round to win by one stroke ( 72 – 71 – 143) over round 1 leader Shannon Brooks of Vienna, VA ( 69-75—144).

Heading into Sunday, Nguyen found herself trailing by three strokes to Shannon Brooks , of Vienna Virginia who posted a fantastic first round of 69. Most of us would head into the final round with one thought in mind “attack.” However, the 2011 Bell Division Order of Merit Champion had a different approach “I wanted to make a lot of pars and if I made some putts the birdies would follow,” stated Nguyen after her round. The birdies certainly came at the right time as Nguyen birdied two of her last five holes including one on eighteen that bested Brooks’ par handing Nguyen the narrow one shot victory.

“It was nice to win again! Shannon is a great player and played solid this week, but I am happy that I was able to make the birdie on eighteen. It was a great pressure situation achievement that I will be able to remember for a long time, “stated Nguyen.

Shannon Brooks final round efforts were strong given the conditions, but her outstanding first round came would not be enough to give her the distance needed to close this one on Nguyen.

Following the two were: third place Emily Stinson from Charlotte, North Carolina of 78-76 –144, Jessica Merrill of Reston Virginia comes in fourth place with consistent scores of 79 -79 —158,  Jordan McKelvin of Westminster, MD in fifth place through a scorecard playoff with Kimberly Mitchell, posting scores of 78-81—158.

The PKB tour would like to extend a special thanks to all the girls who participated in the event this weekend and the Shenandoah Valley GC staff, truly making the Virginia Classic at Shenandoah Valley an event to remember.
