UPDATE: NC Series Chapel Hill Classic at UNC Finley

On Saturday, August 10, the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour played the first round of the NC Series Chapel Hill Classic at UNC Finley in Chapel Hill, NC.

Played at the home course of the UNC Lady Tar Heels, the NC Series Chapel Hill Classic brought together 75 of the region’s members for the second multi-day event of the 2019 North Carolina regional series.

Although the temperature reached highs of 90 degrees in the sweltering humidity of the Piedmont region, the scores were low!

Let’s take a look at where each division stands following the first round of play.

Prep Division

Tied atop the leaderboard of the 31 player Prep division, Nicole Nash (Charlotte, NC 2023) sits in first place after Saturday’s round in sunny Chapel Hill, NC. Nash’s even par round of 72 consisted of just two bogeys evened out by two birdies, carding even par on both nines of UNC Finley.

Just one stroke behind, currently in second place following the first round is Morgan Ellison (Peachtree City, GA 2021). Ellison posted a first-round score of 73 (+1) to stay in contention heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Rounding out the top four in a three-way tie for third place at a score of 74(+2) is Ellen Yu (High Point, NC 2026), Olivia Renville (Cary, NC 2020) and Halynn Lee (Cary, NC 2021).

The leaderboard is crowded in the Prep field heading into Sunday’s final round! Who will punch their ticket into the PKBGT Tournament of Champions?

Futures Division

Jumping ahead of the competition after shooting a first-round score of 77 (+5), Kathryn Ha (Roanoke, VA 2025) holds a four-stroke lead in the 34 player Futures division. Ha, whose carded a slick 37 on the challenging back nine of UNC Finley, was the only player to post a sub-80 round on day 1.

Three strokes back in a three way tie for 2nd sits Leah Edwards (Greensboro, NC 2025), Lily Rowe (Raleigh, NC 2022) and Mary Kathryn Hedrick (Wake Forest, NC 2021). Edward’s round included four birdies while Rowe and Hedrick’s included two birdies each.

By utilizing innovative yardage-based divisions instead of the traditional age-based format, the tour focused on developing tournament experience at the player’s pace. The 2019 season will feature over 90 tournaments in 9 states on the East Coast and with over 900 members, the PKBGT is the largest girl’s only tour in the country.  Learn more about the PKBGT at http://www.pkbgt.org/.
