Update: Tarheel Classic at UNC Finley

Chapel Hill, NCOn Saturday, March 7-8th the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour began play at the Tarheel Classic at UNC-Chapel Hill, home of the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, one of the strongest collegiate tournaments in the US. Strong wind gusts headlined the first round and tested the 89 person field.

Bell National

Leading the Bell National field is Macy Pate (Boone, NC 2024), after an opening even-par round of 72 (E). The Boone, NC native carded three birdies in her opening round and holds a three-stroke lead heading into the final round. In Macy’s two previous starts in 2020, she finished second at the Cape Fear Classic in late February and tied for second at the PKB Foundation Classic at Forest Creek in early February.

Prep Preview

Leading the Prep Preview field is Shea Smith (Charlotte, NC 2022), after shooting an opening round of 77 (+5). The Charlotte, NC native carded one birdie in her opening round and holds a two-stroke lead heading into the final round. Smith’s lone birdie came on the treacherous par-three fourteenth. She was just one of two players to go under par on #14. Shea is competing in her first event of 2020.

Futures National

Leading the Futures National field is Emerson Dever (Durham, NC 2025) and Sydnee Gaines (Nottingham, MD 2023) after opening rounds of 78 (+6). The two leaders hold a slim one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Tarheel Classic. Dever and Gaines both carded two birdies in their opening rounds. Dever is fresh off her victory at the weather-shortened Rocket Tour Championship. Gaine’s last victory occurred back in 2019 at Hobbit’s Glen in September.

About the PKBGT

Founded in 2007 by Girls Golf of America, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, as a local girls’ golf tour in the Triad region of North Carolina.  The tour began as a simple concept: create more effective competitive playing opportunities for girls. By utilizing innovative yardage-based divisions instead of the traditional age-based format, the tour focused on developing tournament experience at the player’s pace.
