2017 Season Primer: Event Entry Policies

As we begin the 2017 season on the PKBGT, we would like to lay out a few key policies and procedures for the Tour, including a few changes,  that will help you navigate the tour this season.  We are excited about the many new opportunities in this our 11th season.  With the continued growth of the tour, now with over 600 active participants, new Series and events are being offered to provide the best experience for all our members!

Priority Based Entry

The PKBGT Priority Based Entry system exists to create a registration method for Championship & elite national Classic events.  This system guarantees our top players are ensured the strongest fields for these events to promote ranking growth and national exposure by having some of the strongest fields on the East Coast. For example, the PKBGT Invitational, PKBGT Tournament of Champions and Tarheel Classic were all top 75 events in the country in 2016 and most of the PKBGT Championships were inside the Top 200.

For each event that uses the Priority system, a players ranking on the PKBGT Performance Index, National Junior Golf Scoreboard and other ranking factors will be considered to determine the field. Please note the registration deadline for these events has been moved forward a week to accommodate the waiting list players to provide adequate time to arrange travel plans. Read the full explanation about PKBGT Priority Based Entry by clicking here.

Article: Order of Merit & Championships

This week, we will focus on the PKBGT points and rankings systems used on the tour and what they mean.  In addition, we will highlight the PKBGT Championship event schedule and how you can qualify for these exclusive, highly ranked events.  One of the biggest factors collegiate coaches use to elevate players is how they do head to head against their peers at 6,000 yards or more.  PKBGT Championships have become a proving ground for the top players in the East and are most popular events for attendance by the collegiate coaches.

ORDER OF MERIT CHANGES – The PKBGT Order of Merit will be changing for 2014 into a streamlined, points based system for each Series offered.  A separate Order of Merit will be calculated for the Bell Spring Series, Bell Prep Series & the Futures Series.  Players standing on the Order of Merit within an individual series will be based on the Top-5 event point totals earned during a series schedule.  For example, for the Bell Spring Series there are 16 total events, meaning a player’s best 5 results will make up their total points earned.  The player with the highest total will be named Bell Spring Series Order of Merit champion.  Events have different weights based on the type of event (Championship events being the largest, One-Day Open Series events the lowest).  The new system will be active on the web site in early 2014 at http://www.pkbgt.org/merit.php

PKBGT PERFORMANCE INDEX – New for 2014, the PKBGT will be adding a Performance Index as the official ranking system of the PKBGT.  The Index will rate all players on tour over the last 12 months together, regardless of the division played.  The Index will use the players scores related to course difficulty (scoring differential), points earned at PKBGT events (how you compare to your peers) and win bonus (bonuses for winning events in any division) to create a rankings list.  The Performance Index will be used as a way for coaches to compare players on the tour no matter the division played as well as provide a formula for players to earn status into PKBGT Championships and other top events.  The new PKBGT Performance Index will be introduced in early 2014.  Stayed tuned for the first listing!!

QUALIFYING FOR PKBGT CHAMPIONSHIPS – With only 8 PKBGT Championship events on the schedule for 2014, earning entry will be a top priority for tour members in all PKBGT divisions.  PKBGT Championships are split up into 3 categories, the regular Championships, series ending Championships and Invitational’s.  For regular PKBGT Championships, we use a Priority Based Entry platform for the Bell & Futures divisions, meaning any player may register for the event but a particular manner will be used to select the field.  For regular PKBGT Championships, players inside the Top-500 on Junior Golf Scoreboard will be guaranteed entry at the time of registration provided the field is not full.  The remaining spots will be filled at the event deadline by the tournament committee based on PKBGT Performance Index standing, Order of Merit standing within your series & national ranking. If more players have registered than spots are available, a waiting list will be kept.  Full refunds will be provided for any player who does not get into the field.

For series ending PKBGT Championships, added preference will be given to players ranking of the Order of Merit for that series and players must have current PKBGT standing to participate.  For the Tour Championship, entry preference will be made based on current Series standings.  For the Tournament of Champions, players will earn entry to this event solely through their play during the 2014 season.  Players can guarantee entry by winning a PKBGT event or finishing in the Top-3 at a PKBGT Championship.  In addition, players can earn conditional status by finishing runner-up in a PKBGT Classic event or winning a Bell Division event in 2013.  Learn all the ways to qualify for the 2014 PKBGT Tournament of Champions, to be played September 13-14, at http://www.pkbgt.org/tournaments_toc.php.

Lastly, the PKBGT Invitational is the premier event on the PKBGT calendar.  Held the second weekend of November each year, the invitational is open to an elite field and attracts the top collegiate programs to gauge future collegiate players in the true collegiate elements.  Playing from 6,200 in the late fall, the course conditions and elite field provide the ideal recruiting venue for collegiate coaches looking for apples to apples comparison of players to the collegiate game.  Again in 2014, the PKBGT Invitational will be the start of the 2015 season for the Bell Division.  Players may earn entry through strong play during the PKBGT season or by winning events inside and out of the PKBGT.  In addition, individual qualifiers will be held in the Fall for players to have additional chances to earn entry into the field.  Learn all the ways to qualify for the PKBGT invitational at http://www.pkbgt.org/inc/inv_criteria.pdf.

Article: Accomplishing the Mission

Accomplishing the Mission – Participation, Recruit PKB & New Sponsors

This week, we will focus on our members and sponsors, the growing number of girls in the east and companies who are making an impact in junior girl’s golf and the collegiate ranks.  Through growing participation across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest the tour continues to grow and remains the largest “girls’ only” tour in the country.  In addition, new sponsorship partnerships with three new companies in addition to the strong support from the LPGA, further assist the PKBGT in fulfilling our mission of increased competitive opportunities for female golfers.

INCREASED MEMBERSHIP & PARTICIPATION – 2013 saw the tour membership grow to just under 400 players, a 12% increase from 2012, including large growth in the Mid-Atlantic & Midwest.  With the influx of new players from new regions, the strength and size of tournament fields were the benefit, as noted last week in the increased national ranking recognition of tour events.  In 2013 PKBGT Championship events, participation averaged 72 participants with representatives from an average of 7 states.  PKBGT Classic multi-day events averaged 46 participants, with multiple events during the Spring Series reaching the PKBGT maximum of 90 girls.   PKBGT One-Day Open Series events averaged 37 participants, providing an ideal environment for developing players to meet similar girls in a fun, yet competitive setting.

For the 2013 season, 57% of the members participated in Bell Division Series events while the remaining 43% were in the Futures Division.  For 2014, we project our growth to continue, providing even stronger and diverse fields.  With the addition of the various Series in the 2014 tour, we will have numerous opportunities for players of all stages of the development process to compete and be recognized.

MEMBER SIGNINGS – The early signing period this November was the biggest yet for the PKBGT with 51 members from the Class of 2014 signing national letters of intent to play collegiate golf next Fall.  In the 7 year history of the tour, 240 members have fulfilled this dream!  Also exciting is another 12 members from the Classes of 2014 & 2015 have already made verbal commitments to play collegiate golf in the future.  A key mission of the PKBGT since its founding, these statistics re-energize our efforts as our players reach their goals.  With the creation of our RecruitPKB initiative led by College Consultant Brandi Jackson in 2013, we are poised to continue this trend and provide the events and resources to help PKBGT families navigate and be seen during the college recruiting process.  Learn more at http://recruit.pkbgt.org/.

ALUMNI EXCELLING IN THE COLLEGIATE RANKS – It is exciting for us to see the girls continue to have success when they reach the collegiate ranks and beyond.  From 2008 & 2009 Order of Merit season champion Katherine Perry (Cary, NC) earning All-American status while a member of the UNC Chapel Hill golf team or Laura Wearn (Charlotte, NC) making the second stage of LPGA Tour School this year, PKBGT alumni are making a splash.   Recent PKBGT alumni are also making a mark, with multiple players winning collegiate events this fall including Ashlli Thompson (Brown Summit, NC) for UNC Pembroke, Sarah Bae (Raleigh, NC) for High Point University, Ali Green (West Chester, OH) for Ashland University and Taylor Allison (Elizabeth City, NC) for Western Carolina University.  In addition, three PKBGT Alumni are currently ranked in the Top 100 in the Shotstat Collegiate Rankings including Sloan Shanahan (Suwanee, GA, Clemson University) at 36th, Kateyln Dambaugh (Goose Creek, SC, U. of South Carolina) at 85th, and Sarah Bae (Raleigh, NC, High Point U) at 99th.

COACHES ON SITE AT PKBGT EVENTS – RecruitPKB College Consultant Brandi Jackson keeps in regular communication with collegiate coaches on the East Coast to learn what they are looking for and inviting them to attend and recruit at PKBGT events.  PKBGT Championships and Classic events are prime opportunities to see numerous coaches following the action on-site.  For example, at the 2013 PKBGT Invitational, we were excited to see many of the regions strongest programs on-site, including Clemson, Furman, Gardner-Webb, Georgia, UNC Greensboro, High Point, Michigan State, NC State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.  Learn more about programs recruiting PKB at http://recruit.pkbgt.org/collegeresearchcenter.php.

NEW SPONOSRS OF BOARD FOR 2014 – We are excited to announce three new sponsors for 2014 and the return of our principle sponsor, the LPGA Foundation & the LPGA/USGA Girls Golf program.  The charitable arm of the LPGA, the LPGA Foundation certified the PKBGT in 2012 as an LPGA Approved Tour, the only such tour with this designation in the country.  The PKBGT is promoted nationally through the LPGA/USGA Girls Golf programs and provides a great way to get in touch with developing players looking for a place to play.

In 2014, two new “Tour Sponsors” have joined the PKBGT team, Gogie Girl Headwear and Frogg Toggs Sport Towels.  Froggs Toggs will be providing a PKBGT logoed Sport Towel and Gogie Girl Headwear will be providing a PKBGT logoed hat to each 2014 PKBGT membership packet.  In addition, each will be providing specials & discounts throughout the year for PKBGT members.  Also in 2014, we are excited to have Rocket Tour Golf as the new “Event Sponsor” for the PKBGT Players Championships.  The newly named, Rocket Tour Players will be played February 15 & 16th in Braselton, Georgia and players will be treated to an awesome custom PKB Rocket Tour headcover for participating.  It is companies like these that are allowing the PKBGT to achieve our mission of affordable competitive opportunities and a truly making a difference in girls’ golf!

Article: Rankings Partnerships Enhancements

Rankings Partnerships Enhancements

This week, we will focus on the increased national exposure being generated for the players by playing in PKBGT events.  Through our partnerships with the Golfweek/Titleist Ratings, AJGA Performance Based Entry, Junior Golf Scoreboard, the Joe Cheves Invitational and the state ranking systems of North & South Carolina we are increasing the opportunities for our members.  These rankings allow PKBGT members to be recognized on a national stage by collegiate coaches as well as provide a forum to attract more exposure and recognition to the PKBGT and our players.  With over 52 players signing National Letters of Intent to play collegiate golf during the early signing period this November, PKBGT members are truly inspiring, dreaming and achieving!  Click here for more information.

GOLFWEEK/TITLEIST JUNIOR RATINGS – For 2014, Golfweek/Titleist Ratings will continue to rank PKBGT Championships and the NC University Classic at UNC Chapel Hill.  Ratings will be submitted for all Bell/Prep players who complete the event per ranking regulations.  PKBGT events continue to be some of the highest ranked junior tour events, earning event strengths well above other regional tours in the East and rivaling some of the biggest tournaments in the country for our PKBGT Championships.

DID YOU KNOW: The PKBGT Players Championship was the highest ranked PKBGT event of 2013, ranking as the 55th strongest girls golf event in the country, and ranking 2nd highest of all other junior tours outside the AJGA.   The 2014 Rocket Tour Players will be played February 15-16 at Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Georgia.  Click here for more tournament information.

AJGA PERFORMANCE BASED ENTRY – New for 2014, the PKBGT has been elevated by the AJGA PBE.  Players in all PKBGT divisions are eligible for AJGA PBE Performance Stars with qualifying performances.  In the Bell & Prep Division, all PKBGT Championship winners will now receive 8 Performance Stars.  The 2nd and 3rd place finishers will receive 4 Stars.  For Classic events, all Bell & Prep champions will receive 4 Stars.  For events with at least 18 in the Bell or Prep field, those who finish in the Top 10% of field are guaranteed 1 Star.  For the Futures division, all Championship & Classic event champions will receive 1 Performance Star.   All PKBGT events have provisional rankings status until the minimum field size is met per AJGA guidelines (12 players for Bell/Prep, 6 for Futures).  With an average of 52 players in Classic events in 2013, PKBGT is poised to provide the most opportunities on the East Coast this spring for players to earn AJGA status.  The PKBGT will automatically submit tournament results to AJGA for players to receive recognition.

DID YOU KNOW: 2013 PKBGT Carolina’s Classic champion Bailey Tardy (2015, Norcross, GA) is currently the highest ranked PKBGT member on the Junior Golf Scoreboard at 27th in the country.

JUNIOR GOLF SCOREBOARD – All multi-day events will be ranked by JGE in 2014.  PKBGT will automatically submit results to JGE with each division being ranked separately.  All players will earn a national and state ranking through JGE which offers a searchable database for all players on their website.

JOE CHEVES JUNIOR INVITATIONAL – Bell Division champions in PKBGT Championships will earn an exemption into the 2014 Joe Cheves Junior.  In addition, the runner-up in the PKBGT Open Championships will earn an exemption to one of most prestigious Invitational’s in junior golf.

INCREASED STATE RANKINGS FOR NC & SC PLAYERS – For our North & South Carolina members, performance in the Bell & Prep divisions will earn ranking points with the State Ranking Systems.  For NC, increased multiplier status has been raise for the PKBGT Invitational & Open Championships in addition to the additional PKBGT Championships.  All Bell/Prep players who compete at a PKBGT event will earn ranking points.  For the South Carolina rankings, we are excited to announce additional multiplier status (4x) for all PKBGT Championship events and the NC University Classic.  All PKBGT Classics events in GA, SC or NC will also count towards SCJGA rankings provided the player finishes in the top 50% of players per SCJGA guidelines.

If you have any questions about our ranking partnerships or how they are relevant to you or your player, please contact me at mparker@pkbgt.org or call the offices.

Article: PKB Series & Tour Construction

PKBGT Series & Tour Construction

After growing to over 400 members, the 2014 tour structure will feature only a few changes to structure and schedule. Building upon our growth into new regions in 2013, the schedule will again feature our winter events in Georgia & South Carolina and new Mid-Atlantic events in the spring & summer. The items below will highlight changes for 2014 or items to make sure not to miss. We believe these small changes will allow the tour to continue to grow while identifying the specific needs of our different types of members and maximize the quality of opportunities for all our membership.

SERIES STRUCTURE – We have made some slight changes in the division and schedule construction for the Bell division to reflect the growth of tour participation. For 2014, the tour has split the traditional Bell Division into two series of events, the first the “Bell Series” and the “Prep Series”. The Futures Division will remain unchanged from 2013 and will feature over 30 events in the “Futures Series”. Each Series will have a series-long points system which will earn players exemptions into future events which I will cover in a future article. The Bell Division series will run from November to May and will conclude with the Bell Open Championships at CC of Salisbury Memorial Day weekend. The scoring requirements for the Bell Division have been lowered slightly, with all past Bell Division players grandfathered in to the 2014 season. The new Bell Division – Prep Series will be offered from May – September and will offer all Bell Division players and additional High School aged aspiring collegiate players the chance to compete from 5,600 – 6,000 yards during the summer months. Futures Division players who would like to play longer yardages during the summer events can earn entry into Prep Division events by their play during the tour season. See the specific division guidelines at www.pkbgt.org/about.php#divisions.

COLLEGIATE COURSES – In 2014, 15 golf courses which are home to collegiate teams are on the schedule so far providing PKBGT players the chance to pair their tournament with a college tour or coach visit. The collegiate courses at UNC Chapel Hill, Clemson, NC State, USC, Coastal Carolina and Furman again lead the Winter/Spring schedule with additional new events at UVA, East Carolina & Winthrop. The opportunity to play these collegiate venues at collegiate yardages is a great barometer for players and the coaches evaluating them. See the schedule at http://www.pkbgt.org/schedule.php#upcoming.

PKBGT CHAMPIONSHIPS, NEW MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP – The national events on the PKBGT, the PKBGT Championships feature the top fields and ranking points of all PKBGT events. With new rankings partnership to be covered in next week’s article, the value and exposure of these events are on the rise! The 2014 Championships schedule mirrors 2013 with the addition of a new Match Play Championship to be held at Lakeview GC in Harrisonburg, Virginia in early July. Again in 2014, the Top-3 finishers in the Bell/Prep Division will be awarded PKBGT Gold, Silver & Bronze jewelry pendants. See the PKBGT CHAMPIONSHIP schedule at http://www.pkbgt.org/schedule.php?code=C.

MID-ATLANTIC SERIES – With nearly 25% of the membership hailing from the Mid-Atlantic region, the tour will again offer a Mid-Atlantic Series points race to name the top Bell/Prep player in the region. The Mid-Atlantic Series winner will receive an automatic invitation into the 2014 PKBGT Invitational. See the Mid-Atlantic schedule at http://www.pkbgt.org/schedule.php?code=M.

EVENT REGISTRATION INFORMATION – Here are the 2014 updates for tournament registration:

  1. EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNTS: Players registering more than 45 days in advance for a classic or 30 days in advance of an open tournament will receive a $10 discount off the entry fee.
  2. CLOSING DATES: The close date for PKBGT Championships will be 19 days prior to the start of the event, Classic events 12 days and Open Series events 5 days. If the event is not a priority based entry event, fields are open till the maximum amounts of entries are received. A waiting list will be kept for all events. Priority for waiting lists will be based on national ranking and/or current year tour standing and will be determined by the tournament committee.
  3. CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT PRIORITY: Championships will again use a priority based entry system. All players can register for the tournament and will be placed on a waiting list. At the closing deadline, the tournament committee will select the top Bell, Prep and/or Futures Division players to the field to complete the field size for each division.
  4. CHAMPIONSHIPS & CLASSIC EVENTS SPONSOR EXEMPTIONS: In the Bell & Prep Division, all Championship & Classic events will feature 5 Sponsor Exemptions.
  5. LATE ENTRY FEE: A $20 late entry fee will be charged to any player registering after the closing deadline. This will only be allowed when tournament spots are still available.
