Nguyen, Turk lead after round 1 of Terrapin Classic

On Saturday, April 21, the 2012 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tourplayed the first round of theTerrapin Classic @ University of Maryland GC . The University of Maryland GC, home of the University of Maryland Terrapins men’s and women’s teams, proved a challenging course for for round one of this two day event. The event features a field of 35  players from the PKB Girls’ Golf Tour, the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 400 members and 94 alumni in the collegiate ranks.

The Bell Division field features 24 golfers, highlighted by four of the top 20 players on the 2012 PKBGT Order of Merit lists. After round 1, Bryana Nguyen (Columbia, MD 2014) is leading the field by three strokes at one under par with a score of 70. Not far behind Nguyen is Chandler Case (Rock Hill, SC 2014) at two over par with a score of 73 and Sarah Spicer (Bahama, NC 2016) at four over par with a score of 75. There are eight other girls in the Bell Division that are within nine strokes of the leader.

The Futures Division field features 11 golfers, highlighted by three of the top 15 players on the 2012 PKBGT Order of Merit lists. After round 1, Katie Turk (Blacksburg, VA 2015) is leading the field by three at five over par with a score of 76. Not far behind Turk is Amber Liu (Vienna, VA 2016) at eight over par with a score of 79 and Lena Capoccia (Bethesda, MD 2018) at nine over par with a score of 80.

Weather for Sunday will be rainy with temperatures in the mid 50s. Despite forecast beings grim, nothing will stop these girls from shooting low scores.

The Terrapin Classic @ University of Maryland GC is the second event of the Mid-Atlantic Series, bringing together the top players in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour is an initiative of the Triad Youth Golf Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation aimed at increasing learning and playing opportunities for youth golfers. Based out of Greensboro, North Carolina, the PKBGT offers low cost, nationally ranked girls’ golf tournaments designed to prepare junior girls’ golfers for high school and collegiate golf.
