On Tuesday, August 12, the 2014 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour played the second round of the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club. Pine Needles, host the US Women’s Open in 1996, 2001, and 2007, is among the most well know golf courses in the southern US and a ideal setting for the final open major championship of the 2014 PKB Tour regular season. The event features a field 65 players from the PKB Girls’ Golf Tour, the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 375 members in 2013 and 262 girls playing in or committed to collegiate golf.
In the Bell Division Prep Series, after round two, Siranon Shoomee (Sanford, NC 2016) maintained her 1 shot lead with a two-under par 69 for a two day total of 139. At 3-under, Shoomee leads Sarah Spicer (Bahama, NC 2016) who kept pace with a matching 2-under 69 in Round 2 to sit at 140. Two players sit tied for 3rd, 4 shots back at 143 including Jessica Spicer (Bahama, NC 2016), who fired a PKBGT Tour Championship record 4-under par 67 today and Sydney Mills (Severna Park, MD 2016) who shot a 1-under 70. Jaelyn Tindal (Rock Hill, SC 2015) took the early clubhouse lead by shooting a 3-under 68 to sit in 5th place 144, 5 off the pace.
In addition to the tight race for the Tour Championship crown, this event marks the end of the 2014 season and the points race in the PKBGT Prep Series Order of Merit. After two rounds, the virtual leader of Prep Series Order of Merit is Siranon Shoomee (Sanford, NC 2016). Seven players are within 30 points of the virtual lead. With 2.5 points at stake for each placing in the standings, tomorrow will be an exciting finish to the series as players look to move up the leaderboard to earn more points in the chase!
In the Futures Division, after round two, Katharina Floyd (Chapel Hill, NC 2020) and Diana Cristina Domenech (Richmond, VA 2018) sit tied atop the leaderboard. Sitting 1 & 2 on the season-long Futures Series Order of Merit coming into the event, Floyd & Domenech continue to show their excellence. In Round 2, Floyd shot a 1-over par 72 to sit at 78-72-150 while Domenech has had rounds of 76 & 74 to sit at 150. Olivia John (Summerfield, NC 2018) and Kendall Turner (Chesapeake, VA 2019) sit tied at 152, just 2-shots back of the co-leaders. It will be a wild finish on Wednesday to see who takes home the Tour Championship title.
Following today’s round, the field was reduced to top-50 percent and ties. 154 (12 over par) was cut line in the Bell Division Prep Series and 167 (25 over par) was the cut line in the Futures Division. Weather for Wednesday’s round looks perfect with sunshine and temperatures in the 80’s. Should be a great day to conclude the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP and the 2014 PKBGT season!
