On Saturday, March 8, the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour played the first round of the NC University Classic at the UNC Finley Golf Course. The Finley Golf Course, home of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Tar Heels golf teams, is a demanding course for this two-day tournament. The event features a field of 82 players from the PKB Girls’ Golf Tour, the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 375 members in 2013 and 262 girls playing in or committed to collegiate golf. The event is ranked by the GolfWeek/Titliest national rankings and is the largest classic tournament of the 2013 season.
In the Bell Division, after round one, there is a three-way tie for first between Jennifer Chang (Cary, NC 2018), Emilia Migliaccio (Cary, NC 2017), and Siranon Shoomee (Sanford, NC 2016) who all shot even par each with scores of 72. Not far behind the leaders are Anna Redding (Concord, NC 2015) and Molly Skapik (Miamisburg, OH 2014) who are tied for fourth at one over par each with scores of 73 and Savanah Goodman (Easley, SC 2016) and Megan Munroe (Raeford, NC 2016) who are tied for sixth at two over par each with scores of 74.
In the Futures Division, after round one, Mackenzie Battle (Aberdeen, NC 2018) is leading the field by one stroke at eight over par with a score of 81. Not far behind Battle are Alexis Jarrell (Davidson, NC 2018) and Sirena Walsh (Chantilly, VA 2016) who are tied for second at nine over par each with scores of 81 and Jaden Harman (Grottoes, VA 2019) who is in fourth place at 10 over par with a score of 82.
Weather for Sunday’s round looks splendid with temperatures in the 60s. With so many players within striking distance of the lead, it should be a exciting conclusion to the largest classic event of the 2014 season!
