On Saturday, September 14, the 2013 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour played the first round of the TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS at Moss Creek Country Club (Devils Elbow North Course). Moss Creek, home to the NCAA Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship and the Low Country Intercollegiate hosted by Wofford College, is among the finest in all of the Lowcountry golf courses and Devils Elbow North is a great course for this exclusive, invitation-only major championship. To have earned an invitation, players must have: won (or finished runner-up when the champion is ineligible) a 2013 PKBGT event, placed in the top-3 at a 2013 PKBGT Major Championship, or won a Bell Division 2012 PKBGT event. The event features a field of 20 players. The field is quite strong with 13 of the top 30 players on the 2013 PKBGT Order of Merit lists.
The Bell Division field features 12 golfers, highlighted by four of the top 30 players 2013 PKBGT Order of Merit list. After round one, Jessica Spicer (Bahama, NC 2016) is leading the field by one stroke at three over par with a score of 75. Not far behind Spicer is Elizabeth Bose (Norfolk, VA 2015) at four over par with a score of 76, Madison Moosa (Charlotte, NC 2017) and Adeena Shears (Elizabeth, WV 2016) at five over par each with scores of 77.
The Futures Division field features eight golfers and all of them are in the top 30 players on the 2013 PKBGT Order of Merit lists. After round one, Samantha Vodry (Mooresville, NC 2016) is leading the field by two strokes at six over par with a score of 78. Not far behind Vodry is Mckenzie Hedrick (Bishop, GA 2015) and Morgan Laird (Waxhaw, NC 2015) at eight over par each with scores of 80 and Kit McHutchison (Durham, NC 2015) at nine over par with a score of 81.
Weather for Sunday looks sunny and humid with temperatures in the mid 80s. Despite the sticky weather, it should be a great conclusion this invitation-only major championship. Who will be golden? The top five Bell Division players and the Futures Division champion will all receive invitations to the PKBGT INVITATIONAL which is being held at Grandover Resort (East Course) in Greensboro, NC in November.
