PKBGT Hosts UNC Chapel Hill Finley Classic
Smidinger wins by a smidgen !
Chapel Hill, NC — The cool winds, quick greens and arctic temperatures proved difficult for the PKB Girls this weekend at UNC Finley GC as only a few girls posted sub 80 rounds. However, all of the players who competed THROUGH 36 HOLES demonstrated great determination battling the elements while testing their shot making abilities. Elyse Smidinger of Croffton, MD took home the title posting back to back 77’s for a two day total of 154 for the event claiming victory by one shot !
The Maryland high school champion has been “knocking at the Champions Gate ” often this year, most impressively at the PKB first big event of the year at the Pine Needles Classic where she lost in a three hole playoff (not to mention her only other event this year where she claimed second place at Patriots Point). This time, she hung on in tough conditions to close out her first win of 2011.
“I managed to find the hole yesterday despite a few off iron shots and today I was playing great as I was one under through thirteen, but coming down the stretch I was treading water a bit so I am pretty happy that I had a big cushion built up. Nonetheless it feels great to win !”
Following Smidinger were Lyberty Anderson of Chesterfield, VA (posting 75 subsequently, the low round of of the event) 80-75– 155, Karishma Thiagaraj of Haymarket, VA at 159 (78-81), Alaina Yeatts of Durham, NC at 160 (81-79), and Bryan Nguyen of Columbia, MC at 161 (85-76).
The Futures Division witnessed a tight race at the top as Jessica Spicer of Bahama, NC slid past first round leader and tour new comer Sarah Kern of Springboro, OH (79-89 — 168) for a two shot victory posting 86 on the final day for a 166 total (80-86).
Following the two were Sarah Spicer of Bahama, NC at 82 – 88 — 170, Grace Masengill of Hickory, NC at 82-89 — 171, and Anna Redding of Concord, NC at 89-85 — 174.
The PKB Girls Golf Tour will head to Lexington, NC in a couple of weeks for the Sapona Classic. A great field is already starting to assemble as Pine Needles Classic Champion Victoria Allred, and many others are ready to compete at the at the event.
