Greensboro, NC – On July 1-3, 2022, the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour hosted the fifth playing of the Linville Cup at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club. A three-day regional team challenge and leadership retreat welcomed the top of the Storie Apparel Order of Merit of our 2021 PKBGT Regional Series to compete on six regional teams (NC WEST, NC EAST, MIDDLE ATLANTIC, FLORIDA+, SOUTHEAST, NATIONAL).
Leadership and Team Building
The weekend began on Friday with leadership and team-building activities. The morning was spent meeting the team captains, creating team flags, and competing in the PKB short game circuit on the putting and chipping greens that included games of tic-tac-toe, making a chip, and putting challenges. After storms rolled in during the beginning of practice rounds, teams instead worked together inside on fun mini-games for a prize.
Saturday Morning Matches
The modified-alternate shot format provided plenty of opportunity for great scoring for the six teams in the Saturday morning matches. In the end, National, Mid-Atlantic and Florida+ were the winners of the morning, earning 5 points each. Tying at 3 a piece in the morning match was NC East, NC West and Southeast.
Saturday Afternoon Matches
The big winner of the afternoon matches was National, who sealed their spot in the championship match after a close 5-3 victory over Mid-Atlantic. Joining National in the 18 hole championship match would be team NC West.
In prize match #2, Team Southeast versus Team NC East. In prize match #1, Team Florida+ versus Team Mid-Atlantic.
After the conclusion of play, the forty-eight players and coaches convened for an evening of virtual fellowship and learning with special guests Robert Linville, the co-founder of the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour, and the coaches of the six Linville Cup teams. The young alumni and mentor coaches answered a panel of questions on how golf impacted their careers and life.
Prize Match #2 (NC East vs. Southeast) – Team NC East defeated Team Southeast 7-1.
Prize Match #1 (Florida+ vs. Mid-Atlantic) – As the closest score of the day, Team Mid-Atlantic pulled away 6-2 over Florida+.
Championship Match (National vs. NC West) – Back to being champions! Team NC West has reclaimed the Linville Cup once again with a final score of 7-1.
About the PKBGT Regional Series
One-day tournaments are designed for golfers of all skill levels but are a great place for development golfers to “get into the swing of things” playing tournament golf. The goal of Regional Series events is to provide a fun and friendly tournament on a premium golf course.
About the PKBGT
Founded in 2007 by the Triad Youth Golf Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, as a local girls’ golf tour in the Triad region of North Carolina, the tour began as a simple concept: create more effective competitive playing opportunities for girls. By utilizing innovative yardage-based divisions instead of the traditional age-based format, the tour focused on developing tournament experience at the player’s pace. The 2022 season will feature over 138 tournaments in 12+ states and with over 1,000 members, the PKBGT is the largest girl’s only tour in the country.
