Recap: PKBGT Regional Invitational

Williamsburg, VA The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour heads north for the final time this fall for the annual PKBGT Regional Invitational in Williamsburg, VA, at Ford’s Colony Country Club. The Marsh Hawk course at Ford’s Colony is the oldest of the three-course routings on property opened in 1985. Known for its traditional tree-lined fairways, undulated greens, and natural lakes, the Marsh Hawk should be an exceptional test for the best of our six regional series. Fifty-seven representing seven states will play. Only two will be crowned champions.

On Halloween day, The Marsh Hawk course drew its teeth after taking a beating from Hurricane Zeta. With chilly temperatures and a soggy golf course, the thirty-three player field got their fair share of winter golf practice to begin round one of the PKBGT Prep Invitational at Marsh Hawk Country Club. Mary Grace Dunigan (Kennet Square, PA 2023) concluded the Delaware Valley Series with wins at Raven’s Claw and the WGAP Rita Cooper Cup at Bala Golf Club. The Kennet Square, PA native, picked up right where she left off to kick-off her 2021 PKBGT campaign. Dunigan carded one birdie on Saturday at the par-five sixth hole going out in 36 (E) and coming home in 39 (+3) for a round of 75 (+3).

An overcast Sunday turned into a torrential downpour to close the PKBGT Regional Invitational after a stipulated nine-hole final round. A previous PKBGT National champion stood atop the leaderboard after Sunday’s round. Garland Gould (Raleigh, NC 2024), the Futures National champion at the Wolfpack Classic, shot a three-over round of 39, including a birdie on the par-three fifth. Garland struggled on her first four holes with two bogeys and a double before she recovered, shooting one-under on her final five holes, which included an hour delay due to weather. Gould began day two one shot off Mary Grace Dunigan (Kennet Square, PA 2023). Dunigan fired a (+5) 41 on Sunday to finish one shot behind Garland for the PKBGT Prep Invitational. Finishing third was Emerson Dever (Durham, NC 2025), who won in a scorecard playoff.

1. Garland Gould (Raleigh, NC 2024) / 76 / 39 = 115 (+7)

2. Mary Grace Dunigan (Kennet Square, PA 2023) / 75 / 41 = 116 (+8)

T3. Emerson Dever (Durham, NC 2025) / 78 / 39 = 117 (+9)*

T3. Kayla Maletto (Sinking Springs, PA) / 76 / 41 = 117 (+9)

Futures National

The competitor with one of the longest drives to Williamsburg led wire-to-wire en route to her first PKBGT National title. Avery Smith (Ladson, SC 2025) in the weather-shortened PKBGT Futures Invitational. Smith opened on Halloween day with a (+7) 79 for an overnight five-shot lead. Avery carded two birdies on her round, one on each side on Saturday. During the downpour on Sunday, Smith fended off two large numbers to finish with a four-shot victory. This is Smith’s first PKBGT National title. With her win, the Ladson, SC native, is granted an invitation to the Regional Tournament of Champions in just a few weeks at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Resort in Hilton Head Island, SC.

On Sunday, the biggest mover came from Anna Czarkowski (Morganton, NC 2023), who tied for the low round of 40 to finish in fourth for the tournament. Czarhowski has now finished inside the top five in four straight events dating back to the Georgia Highlands Girls Classic at Cateechee Golf Club.

About the PKBGT

Founded in 2007 by Girls Golf of America, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, a local girls’ golf tour in the Triad region of North Carolina.  The Tour began as a simple concept: create more effective competitive playing opportunities for girls. By utilizing innovative yardage-based divisions instead of the traditional age-based format, the Tour focused on developing tournament experience at the player’s pace. The 2020 season will feature over 110 tournaments in 9 states on the East Coast, and with over 1,000 members, the PKBGT is the largest girl’s only Tour in the country.  Learn more about the PKBGT at http://www.pkbgt.org/.
