Update: National Tournament of Champions

Southern Pines, NC-The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Tour takes over Pinehurst Resort as champions and top performers of the past season gather for the 2020 Tournament of Champions. The girls will take to one of the most prestigious golf clubs in North Carolina at Forest Creek Golf Club as they battle for the ultimate title: Champion of the Champions.

To earn an invitation to the event, players were required to have met the specific pre-tournament qualifications. The top participants punched their ticket to the TOC by winning a tournament on the 2020 PKBGT Tour circuit, winning the 2020 Storie Apparel Regional or National Order of Merit race in their respective division, finishing at the top of the field at 2020 PKBGT Championship Events or finishing runner up at PKBGT Classic events.

The 70 competitors will be split into two separate divisions of play; the Bell National Division and the Prep Preview Division. There will be representatives from nine different states along the east coast, ranging from Florida to Pennsylvania. We delve deeper into each division with our players to watch!

Bell National

Two sit atop the leaderboard at the 2020 National Tournament of Champions after the windy and chilly first round at Forest Creek Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC. Forest Creek hosted the PKB Foundation Classic back in February under quite similar conditions that we saw today. Ella Perna (Durham, NC 2022) played well then and played well today, firing a 73 (+1) round. Perna made the turn at (-2), with three birdies and a lone bogey on the 18th hole. Perna and the rest of the Bell field teed off on the back-nine. Like most of the field, Ella struggled once the wind picked up on the fast and undulating putting complexes coming home in 39 (+3).

Katie Scheck (Greensboro, GA 2021), who signed her NLI to Penn State earlier this month, also found her game before faltering on her final two holes to tie Perna at (+1). Scheck went out in 35 (-1)  with birdies on the par-five twelfth and par-four fifteenth. Scheck parred the next six holes before a wayward tee-shot cost the Peachtree Girls Classic Champion a stroke on her seventeenth hole, and a poor approach shot cost her one more on her eighteenth hole.

Standing one shot off Scheck and Perna is Sydney Yermish (Wynnewood, PA 2023). Yermish, had a top-five finish at the PKBGT Invitational in her last start. It will be Yermish, Scheck, and Perna in the marquee pairing.

Due to overnight frost, the final round will be pushed back to 11:30 with a shotgun start.

Prep Preview

Kylie Bowes (Bluffton, SC 2022), the winner of the Disney Girls Classic, takes a two-shot overnight lead in the Prep Preview Division of the National Tournament of Champions at Forest Creek Golf Club. Bowes carded three birdies on her round, including back-to-back birds on holes ten and eleven. Bowes recorded twelve percent of the birdies that were recorded in either division. Lurking two shots off Bowes is Madison Messimer (Myrtle Beach, SC 2025). Messimer, the winner of nearly every Futures National Championship event in 2020, fired a round of 76 (+4). Three players are one behind Messimer at (+5). Joining Bowes and Messimer in the marque pairing is Katherine Brictson (Raleigh, NC 2025). For most of the day, Katherine held onto the lead before a challenging final hole for the Raleigh, NC native.

Due to impending frost, the final round has been pushed back to 11:30 with a shotgun start.

About the PKBGT

Founded in 2007 by Girls Golf of America, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, a local girls’ golf tour in the Triad region of North Carolina.  The tour began as a simple concept: create more effective competitive playing opportunities for girls. By utilizing innovative yardage-based divisions instead of the traditional age-based format, the tour focused on developing tournament experience at the player’s pace. The 2020-2021 season will feature over 110 tournaments in 9 states on the East Coast, and with over 1,000 members, the PKBGT is the largest girl’s only tour in the country.  Learn more about the PKBGT at http://www.pkbgt.org/.
