Recap: Coastal Carolina Classic

Recap: Coastal Carolina Classic

Conway, SC- The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour concluded play at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina for the annual Coastal Carolina Classic. The Hackler Course, known locally as “The Hack” was in superb shape for the full field of Bell National and Futures National participants. A hole-in-one, a handful of hole-out eagles and a thirteen hole playoff to decide the Bell National champion provided plenty of excitement over two beautiful days of weather.

Bell National

The Bell National overnight leader Kiera Bartholomew (Wake Forest, NC 2023), followed up her opening round of 68 (-4) with a respectable round of 74 (+2) to finish at (-2) for the tournament. Bartholomew ended the 36 holes tied with Amber Mackiewicz (Virginia Beach, VA 2023), who followed up her round 1 score of 71 (-1) with an identical score of 71 thanks to 4 birdies including three on the back nine. What happened next surprised both Kiera, Amber, and the PKBGT staff. Due to the Futures National still playing on the back-nine, the sudden death playoff had to occur on the par-3 tenth hole. Eventually, after eleven consecutive ties on the tenth hole, the two headed to the eleventh and tied there as well.  On the twelfth hole, the thirteenth playoff hole, Amber Mackiewicz, lagged her birdie putt next to the cup and finished with a par to capture her maiden PKBGT title! Bartholomew and Mackiewicz set a new PKBGT record for the most number of playoff holes ever played.

Mackiewicz has not played an event since the Tournament of Champions at the end of the 2019 season. The Virginia Beach, VA native, said, “winning this event with not much tournament experience on the year means so much for my confidence and my belief in myself that I can compete with anyone out on the Bell National circuit.” Amber will be off for the next couple of weeks before resuming her competitive schedule in mid-July.

1.Amber Mackiewicz (Virginia Beach, VA  2023) / 71 / 71 = 142 (-2)*

2. Kiera Bartholomew (Wake Forest, NC 2023) / 68 / 74 = 142 (-2)

3. Kaia Wu (Princeton, NJ 2022) / 70 / 73 = 143 (-1)

4. Sarah Boteler (Greenville, SC 2021) / 73 / 72 = 145 (E)

Futures National

After the conclusion of day one, four players stood atop the Futures National leaderboard, Madison Messimer (Myrtle Beach, SC 2025), Kate Parviainen (Augusta, GA 2022), Lily Kate Watson (Wake Forest, NC 2023), and Delia Parker (Greer, SC 2021). The quartet ended with rounds of 75 (+3). However, of the four round one leaders, the local Messimer was the only player to improve their score on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Conway, SC. Madison carded four birdies in her final round, bringing her total over the thirty-six holes to 6. Messimer’s round of 73 (+1) tied for the low round of the day with the runner-up finisher Emerson B. Dever (Durham, NC 2025). Messimer continues her dominance of the Futures National division, placing now in each of her last five events of the 2020 schedule. Messimer has also won back-to-back PKBGT National Series events. The Myrtle Beach, SC native, captured the PKBGT Open after defeating Kathryn Ha (Roanoke, VA 2025) in a playoff back in late May.

It wasn’t just Messimer lighting up her scorecard with blue circles, Emerson B. Dever (Durham, NC 2025), and Aubree Clements (Summerville, SC 2022) both holed out for eagle during their final round at the Hackler Course. Dever eagled the par-4 eighteenth hole, while Clements holed out on the second hole. Statistically speaking, the second and the eighteenth holes play as the hardest on the golf course for juniors and ladies, according to the golf shop staff.

1. Madison Messimer(Myrtle Beach, SC 2025) / 75 / 73 = 148 (+4)

2. Emerson B. Dever (Durham, NC 2025) / 77 / 73 = 150 (+6)

T3. Abbie Daquila  (Mt. Pleasant, NC 2021) / 78 / 75 = 153 (+9)

T3. Kasey McIlvaine (Raleigh, NC 2023) / 76/ 77 = 153 (+9)
