Recap: PKBGT Open Championship (Prep Preview and Futures National)

Salisbury, NC The final day of the 2020 PKBGT Open Championship held at the historic Country Club of Salisbury provided plenty of drama for both the Prep Preview and Futures National division with a sudden-death playoff determining the champion in each division. Overcast skies and the availability of the entire golf course provided an excellent backdrop to crown our latest major champions as well as the Prep Preview Order of Merit winner.

A special thank you to the entire staff at the Country Club of Salisbury for their continued support of the PKBGT and our mission at Girls Golf of America.

Prep Preview

Hannah Altman (Lake City, SC 2022) stepped onto the first tee this morning three strokes behind the overnight leader Grace Ridenour (Cary, NC 2025), and in search of her first PKBGT title. By the end of the day, Altman would breakthrough and capture her maiden title after a final round of 78 (+7). The Lake City, SC native, carded four birdies over the two rounds but bogeyed the last two holes resulting in a two-way tie at the top with Logan Madison (Brasstown, NC 2022) at (+11). Madison played her final four holes in (-2) to get back to (+11) with Altman. The playoff between Altman and Logan lasted just a hole, as Altman birdied the par-4 tenth.

Altman wasn’t the only Prep Preview participant celebrating after the round. The overnight leader Grace Ridenour was crowned the Order of Merit champion in the Prep Preview division as this championship ended the Prep Preview series for 2020.

Futures National

It took 55 holes to crown the PKBGT Open Championship Futures National medalist. The overnight leader Kathryn Ha (Roanoke, VA 2025) carded back-t0-back rounds of 75, but the low round today by Madison Messimer (Myrtle Beach, SC 2025) forced Ha into a playoff. Madison carded a spectacular round of 72 (+1) where she birdied the tenth and the 15th hole to fire a (-1) back-nine forcing the pressure on the leader Kathryn Ha. On the first playoff hole, Ha had the advantage after Messimer’s tee-ball landed into a fairway bunker up against the lip. Ha’s approach landed just past the hole while Messimer bailed out short and right. Ha’s tricky and slippery birdie putt rolled beyond the hole, and her par putt lipped out. The Palmetto state native made a clutch twenty footer to seal the deal. Messimer now has three wins to her name in the Prep in the 2020 campaign & is in prime position to take over the lead in the Futures National Order of Merit rankings.

1. Madison Messimer (Myrtle Beach, SC 2025) / 78 / 72  = 150 (+8)*

2. Kathryn Ha (Roanoke, VA) / 75 / 75  = 150 (+8)

3. Kanchana Duangsam (Haymarket, VA 2026) / 76 / 77  = 153 (+11)

4. Emerson Dever (Durham, NC 2025) / 77 / 78 = 155 (+13)

About the PKBGT

Founded in 2007 by Girls Golf of America, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, as a local girls’ golf tour in the Triad region of North Carolina.  The tour began as a simple concept: create more effective competitive playing opportunities for girls. By utilizing innovative yardage-based divisions instead of the traditional age-based format, the tour focused on developing tournament experience at the player’s pace. The 2020 season will feature over 1110 tournaments in 9 states on the East Coast, and with over 1,000 members, the PKBGT is the largest girl’s only tour in the country.  Learn more about the PKBGT at http://www.pkbgt.org/.
