Update: Eagle Classic at Georgia Southern University Golf Course

On Saturday January 12, 2019, the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour played the first round of the Eagle Classic at Georgia Southern University Golf Course in Statesboro, GA.

Georgia Southern’s facilities provided high level challenges for players on the first day of competition. The field of 22 competitors are grouped in the Bell National Division, playing the course at 5,927 yards, and the Futures National Division, playing at 5,304 yards.

We take a look at where each division sits after Saturday’s first round.

Bell National

Leading the 14 player Bell National field after the first day of competition is Katie Scheck (Greensboro, GA 2021) who came out strong with a score of 78 (+6). She was able to make two birdies throughout her round including Hole 11.  

In a three way tie for second place with scores of 80 (+8) is Aaron Whitley (Sarasota, FL 2021), Christian Williams (Tallapoosa, GA 2021) and Abigail Whittington (Evansville, IN 2020).

Whitley birdied the ninth hole to close out her front nine, while Williams kickstarted her back nine with a birdie on Hole 10. Whittington maintained her composure all day, staying in the hunt despite not having a birdie throughout the first round.

Rounding out the top five in the Bell National field is Maggie Jackson (Tallulah Falls, GA 2021) with a score of 84 (+12). Jackson’s best hole of the day came early with a birdie on the second hole. 

Futures National

After Saturday’s first round of play, Erica Scutt (Johns Creek, GA 2021) leads the 8 player Futures National field in Statesboro with a score of 75 (+3). Scutt played the course well and finished off strong with a birdie on Hole 16. 

In a tie for second place with a score of 85 (+13) is Lauren Barber (Jeanette, PA 2021) and Annabelle Mozingo (Jacksonville, FL 2022). 

Paige Paolucci (Blythewood, SC 2022) shot a score of 86 (+14) and currently sits in third place.

Closing out the top of the leaderboard at the Eagle Classic in a three-way tie for fifth place is Sophie Lauture (Raleigh, NC 2024), Katerina Klein (Charleston, SC 2020) and Abigail Cheney (Guyton, GA 2021) with first round scores of 91 (+19).

The second and final round of the Eagle Classic takes place Sunday January 13 at Georgia Southern University Golf Course in Statesboro, GA. We wish all of our competitors the best of luck in their final round!
