Recap: Halama, Lewis, Shin Win Tar Heel Classic at UNC Chapel Hill Finley GC

The PKBGT is back in action this weekend, March 10-11, with a full field of 90 girls on the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  One of the most popular events on the tour schedule, the Tar Heel Classic attracts one of the largest and strongest fields of the season.

The Tar Heel Classic was the sixth and final pre-qualifying tournament of the Women’s Health Classic Junior Challenge presented by the Self Regional Healthcare Foundation. The Challenge will consist of 7 events between January and March 2018 and be operated by the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour. The first 6 pre-qualifying events will be open to any PKBGT member and will qualify PKBGT Bell National players for the Junior Challenge Qualifier on March 24-25, 2018 at the Links at Stoney Point. The champion of the qualifier will receive the sponsor exemption* (qualifying player must have a USGA handicap index of 3.7 or better to be granted the exemption). After a 2-hole playoff, the Champion of the Bell National Division is Lexanne Halama (Knoxville, TN 2021) with a two-day total of 2-under par, 69-71-140. Finishing runner-up, also with a score of 2-under par 70-70-140 is Katherine Schuster (Kill Devil Hills, NC 2021). Taking third place is Nicole Adam (Pinehurst, NC 2020) with a score of 73-72-145. There was a two-way tie for 4th place. Finishing in fourth place with a score of 73-73-146 is Kayla Smith (Burlington, NC 2019). And Madison Isaacson (Greensboro, NC 2018) finished in fifth place with a score of 72-74-146.

The Champion of the Prep Preview Division is Christina Lewis (Wexford, PA 2019) with a two-day total of 74-77-151. There was a two-way tie for 2nd place. Finishing runner-up with a score of 79-73-152 is Charleigh Hodges (Mooresville, NC 2018). Taking third place is  Gabrielle Shieh (Carlisle, MA 2020) with a score of 76-76-152. Finishing in fourth place with a score of 78-76-154 is Jayla Rogers (Wilmington, NC 2019). And Grayson Warren (Washington, NC 2021) finished in fifth place with a score of 80-76-156. Grayson also had a hole-in-one on hole number 14!

The Champion of the Futures National Division is Julie Shin (Brambleton, VA 2022) with a two-day total of 75-73-148. Finishing runner-up with a score of 74-77-151 is Liza Lapeyre (New Orleans, LA 2022). Taking third place is Abby Hunter (Blacksburg, VA 2021) with a score of 80-76-156. Finishing in fourth place with a score of 80-77-157 is Laney Wessels (Sophia, NC 2021). And Katelyn Kenthack (Pinehurst, NC 2020) finished in fifth place with a score of 78-81-159.

The PKBGT returns to action March 17-18 for the Boar’s Head Inn Classic at UVA’s Birdwood Country Club. We look forward to a great event!
