Recap: Playoff! Bookholdt, Adam Win PKB Junior

— Live Scoring —

Pine Needles Lodge & GCThe weather could not have been better for golf over the course of the tournament!  Temperatures today remained in the low 70s and the players enjoyed some blue skies and sunshine towards the conclusion of play.  We were very fortunate for such ideal conditions in late December.  The real treat of the day came during the awards ceremony, when Miss Peggy Kirk Bell joined us in the tournament room to congratulate our top-five players in each series.  The girls were all very excited to meet her and take a picture or two!

Miss Bell also was able to watch the playoff for first place in the Bell Series between Ashley Czarnecki (Greenville, SC 2016)  and Haley Bookholdt (Columbus, NJ 2017).  Both players shot a 147 total for the 36-hole event.  The playoff was played between holes 18 and 1.  Both girls tied the first playoff hole with a par, and then it came down to the uphill 420 yard par 5 first hole.  Both Czarnecki and Bookholdt hit it down the middle on their drives and second shots.  The difference would be in the their approaches to the green.  Czarnecki’s approach went long, forcing her to sink a 10 to 15 foot par put for her up and down and to extend the match.  Bookholdt was safely on the green and two putted for her par, which gave her the victory.  In third place was Gracyn Burgess (Lexington, SC 2018) who was able to improve her first round score by ten shots, shooting 80-70-150.  In fourth place was Moon Cheong (Charlotte, NC 2017) who was only one stroke behind third place with a 151 total.  In fifth place, also by only one shot (152) was Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill, SC 2018).

Winning the Futures Series today was Nicole Adam (Pinehurst, NC 2020) with a 36-hole total of 151.  Her steady play during both rounds combined with her ability to make la lot of pars is what gave her the overall victory!  The runner-up in the Futures Series was Melissa Meng (Blacksburg, VA 2020).  Her 155 total was just six strokes behind first place.  In third and fourth place each with a 157 were Grace Huffman (Lexington, VA 2018) and Rory Weinfurther (Midlothian, VA 2020).  In fifth place by one stroke with a 158 total was Elizabeth Coffren (Owings, MD 2020).

Congratulations to all of our top-five finishers!

Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, the host of the Peggy Kirk Bell Junior, was also host to the US Women’s Open in 1996, 2001, and 2007.  The strong history of women’s golf at Pine Needles combined with a championship-level course make it the ideal location for the further development of the game and the unofficial home of the PKB Girls’ Golf Tour.

A big thank you goes out to the Bell and McGowan families and the Pine Needles staff for hosting yet another wonderful event for us!  The PKBGT will return to action across the street from Pine Needles at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club on January 30-31 with the PKB Foundation Classic.
