Recap: Castle wins Palmetto Classic

On Sunday, March 16, the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour canceled the second round of the Palmetto Classic at Cobblestone Park Golf Club due to threatening weather. Cobblestone, home of the University of South Carolina-Columbia Gamecocks golf teams, proved a tricky course for the tournament. The event featured a field of 33 players from the PKB Girls’ Golf Tour, the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 375 members in 2013 and 262 girls playing in or committed to collegiate golf.

In the Bell Division, Jensen Castle (West Columbia, SC 2019) won by one stroke at five over par with a score of 76. Ann Elizabeth Gore (Lexington, SC 2015) shot six over par with a score of 77 to place second. Chandler Case (Rock Hill, SC 2014) shot seven over par with a score of 78 and won a scorecard play-off to place third.

In the Futures Division, Baylee Evans (Lancaster, SC 2018) won by four strokes at five over par with a score of 76. Jalen Castle (West Columbia, SC 2020) shot nine over par with a score of 80 to place second and Madison Branum (Lexington, SC 2018) shot 11 over par with a score of 82 to place third.

With their victory’s, Castle and Evans both received class A exemptions into the Tournament of Champions this fall. With their runner-up finishes, Gore and Castle both received class B exemptions into the Tournament of Champions.

PKBGT returns to action next weekend on Saturday-Sunday, March 22-23 with the Rocket Tour PLAYERS @ Pebble Creek Club (Creekside Course) in Taylors, SC. The Rocket Tour PLAYERS is the first championship event of the 2014 season and brings together players from Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and even Ontario, Canada.
