Preview: TOURNEY OF CHAMPS at Dolphin Head

On Saturday-Sunday, September 20-21, the 2014 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour plays the TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS at Dolphin Head Golf Club. The course is a Gary Player design and is a favorite among the Island courses. The event features a field 17 players from the PKB Girls’ Golf Tour, the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 375 members in 2013 and 262 girls playing in or committed to collegiate golf.

To qualify for this exclusive event, players must have won a 2014 PKBGT event, finished runner-up in a 2014 PKBGT Classic event, placed in the top-3 at a 2014 PKBGT Championship event, or won a 2013 Bell Division PKBGT event. In this elite field, the tournament is highlighted by seven of the top-100 players on the PKBGT Performance Index, including: Delaney Shah (North Potomac, MD 2016) ranked 12th, Adeena Shears (Elizabeth, WV 2016) ranked 37th, Caroline Curtis (Glen Allen, VA 2019) ranked 55th, Katharina Floyd (Chapel Hill, NC 2020) ranked 59th, Caroline Cahill (Wilmington, NC 2017) ranked 79th, Taylor Lance (Travelers Rest, SC 2015) ranked 82nd, and Diana Cristina Domenech (Richmond, VA 2018) ranked 89th.

Dolphin Head Golf Club is a private, member-owned golf club located on beautiful Hilton Head Island inside the legendary Hilton Head Plantation. A Gary Player design, it was Player’s first course in the Hilton Head area and was open for play in 1974, making it Hilton Head Plantation’s first golf course. The Gary Player design offers players of all skill levels an exceptional and challenging golf experience. The course has matured into an Island favorite. Dolphin Head Golf Club is a unique golf course with two very different nine holes, giving golfers a taste of both the common tree lined fairways found on Hilton Head and the open headlands near the coastline. Player wanted to capture the natural beauty of the area and protect the many wetlands and old growth trees that have been here for hundreds of years, so he used a very unobtrusive approach to his construction. What transpired was a beautiful layout with eighteen distinctively different holes, capturing the natural settings that create the Hilton Head Island ambiance. While you are playing your round of golf you may see alligators sunning on the banks, or you might spot an egret or hawk, or even an eagle swooping down to snatch a fish out of one of the many ponds, and on occasion you could see a family of wild turkeys scampering across a fairway.

The TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS is an invitation-only qualifier for the PKBGT INVITATIONAL in November. At the conclusion of the event, invitations to the PKBGT INVITATIONAL will be extended to the top-four players in the Bell Division and the top-three players in the Futures Division. The tournament brings together players from Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. It should be a great tournament!
