On Thursday, July 18, the 2014 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour played the One-Day Open Series at the West Course at Bermuda Run Country Club. One-day tournaments are designed for golfers of all skill levels, but are a great place for development golfers to “get in to the swing of things” playing tournament golf. The goal of One-Day Open Series events is to provide a fun and friendly tournament on a premium golf course. The event featured a field of 42 players from the PKB Girls’ Golf Tour, the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with nearly 400 members in 2014 and over 300 girls playing in or committed to collegiate golf.
In the Bell Division-Prep Series, Joliana Elias (2015, Jamestown, NC) shot a 1-over par 72 to claim a 2-shot lead for her first PKBGT Bell Division title of her career. Morgan Laird’s (2015, Waxhaw, NC) 3-over par 74 was good enough for solo second and vaulted her into a tie for fourth on the PKBGT Prep Series Order of Merit. The Top-5 finishers on the final Prep Series Order of Merit will earn invitations to the year-end 2014 PKBGT Invitational. Meghan Holbrooks (2014, Winston-Salem, NC) claimed third with a 75.
In the Futures Division, Sophie Holland (202o, Cornelius, NC) claimed her first career PKBGT Futures title with a 12-foot birdie putt on the third play-off hole. Sophie was joined in the play-off by Sydney White (2015, Charlotte, NC) & PKBGT newcomer Ashley Kim (2017, Chapel Hill, NC). Each player shot an 8-over par 80 to reach the play-off. Holland and White both made par on the Par 4 18th hole to make the 2nd hole of the play-off, with Ashley just missing her par put. After matching par’s on the 2nd play of #18, Sophie hit her tee-shot to 12 feet on the Par 3 #17 and nailed the putt to claim the title. With the win, Holland moved into 4th place on the PKBGT Futures Order of Merit and is within 6 points of the Top-3 which earn invitations to the year-end 2014 PKBGT Invitational.
With their victories, Elias and Holland received a class A exemptions into the Tournament of Champions this fall.
PKBGT returns to action on Monday-Tuesday, July 21-22 with the Seahawk Classic @ Country Club of Landfall (Nicklaus-Marsh/Pines) in Wilmington, NC. The event brings together players from Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.
