Recap: Wong wins Boars Head Inn Classic

On Tuesday, July 23, the 2013 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour concluded the Boar’s Head Inn Classic at Birdwood Golf Course at UVA. Birdwood, home to the University of Virginia men’s and women’s golf teams is an excellent course for this two-day tournament. The event featured a field of 28 players. It was a strong field with four players ranked inside the top 10 in their state by Junior Golf Scoreboard, one player ranked inside the top 10 in her state by Junior Golf Scoreboard, two players ranked inside the top 100 for their class by Junior Golf Scoreboard, and four of the top 40 players on the 2013 PKBGT Order of Merit lists.

In the Bell Division, Allison Wong (Rockville, MD 2014) shot three over par with a score of 75 to place first with a score of 79 + 75 = 154. Elizabeth Bose (Norfolk, VA 2015) shot six over par with a score of 78 to place second with a score of 77 + 78 = 155. Grace Massengill (Hickory, NC 2016) shot nine over par with a score of 81 to place third with a score of 77 + 81 = 158.

In the Futures Division, Lena Capoccia (Bethesda, MD 2018) shot six over par with a score of 78 to place first with a score of 81 + 78 = 159. Diana Cristina Domenech (Richmond, VA 2018) shot 11 over par with a score of 83 to place second with a score of 83 + 83 = 166. Liza Lewis (Richmond, VA 2015) shot 15 over par with a score of 87 to place third with a score of 88 + 87 = 175.

With their victory’s today, Wong and Capoccia both received exemptions into the sixth major tournament of the season, the Tournament of Champions which is being held at Moss Creek Country Club (North Course) in Hilton Head Island, SC in September.

PKBGT returns to action on Friday, July 26 with the One-Day Open Series @ Bermuda Run Country Club (West Course) in Bermuda Run, NC. The tournament brings together players from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. It should be a great tournament.

The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour is an initiative of the Triad Youth Golf Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation aimed at increasing learning and playing opportunities for youth golfers. Based out of Greensboro, North Carolina, the PKBGT offers low cost, nationally ranked girls’ golf tournaments designed to prepare junior girls’ golfers for high school and collegiate golf. The PKBGT is the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 330 members in 2012, 137 alumni in the collegiate ranks and 29 National Letter of Intent signees for fall 2013.
