Recap: Hartsell wins One-Day at Rock Barn

On Friday, July 12, the 2013 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour played the One-Day Open Series at Rock Barn Golf & Spa (Jackson Course). Rock Barn is home to the PGA Champions Tour Greater Hickory Kia Classic and the Jackson Course is a iconic course for fifth one-day tournament of the 2013 season. One-day tournaments are designed for golfers of all skill levels, but are a great place for development golfers to “get in to the swing of things” playing tournament golf. The goal of One-Day Open Series events is to provide a fun and friendly tournament on a premium golf course. The event featured a field of 26 players.

In the Bell Division, there was a tie for first between Abbey Hartsell (Hickory, NC 2015) and Grace Massengill (Hickory, NC 2016) who both shot nine over par with scores of 80. Hartsell won a one-hole sudden-death playoff to win the event. Hartsell has won this event back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013. Savanna Mackie (Greensboro, NC 2014) shot 12 over par par with a score of 83 to place third.

In the Futures Division, Morgan Laird (Waxhaw, NC 2015) shot six over par with a score of 77 to place first. Moon Cheong (Charlotte, NC 2017) shot seven over par with a score of 78 to place second. Callista Rice (Mars Hill, NC 2017) shot eight over par with a score of 79 to place third.

With their victory’s today, Hartsell and Laird both received exemptions into the sixth major tournament of the season, the Tournament of Champions which is being held at Moss Creek Country Club (North Course) in Hilton Head Island, SC in September.

PKBGT returns to action on Monday, July 15 with the One-Day Open Series at Sapona Ridge Country Club. Sapona is a classic course for sixth one-day tournament of the 2013 season. The tournament brings together players from across North Carolina. It should be a great tournament.
