On Sunday, April 28, the 2013 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour attempted to play the second round of the Paladin Classic at Furman University Golf Club. Due to unrelenting rain, the second round was ultimately canceled and the top five finishers in each division were based on round one scores. Furman University Golf Club, home of the Furman University Paladin men’s and women’s golf teams, is a classic course for this tournament. The was a strong field of 71 players with eight of the top 500 players ranked nationally by Junior Golf Scoreboard and 17 players ranked inside the top 100 for their class by Junior Golf Scoreboard.
In the Bell Division, Shannon Brooks (Vienna, VA 2015) placed first with a round one score of one over par with a score of 73. Today’s win makes back-to-back wins for Brooks after her victory last weekend at Terrapin Classic at University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park, MD. Allyson Markiewicz (Charlotte, NC 2013) placed second with a round one score of five over par with a score of 77. After round one there was a tie for third place between six girls who all shot six over par with a score of 78. By performing a scorecard playoff among the six girls tied for third, Carly Burkhardt (Greenville, SC 2016) placed third overall.
In the Futures Division, Madison Branum (Lexington, SC 2018) placed first with a round one score of seven over par with a score of 79. Jensen Castle (West Columbia, SC 2019) placed second with a round one score of eight over par with a score of 80 and Callista Rice (Mars Hill, NC 2017) placed third with a round one score of nine over par with a score of 81.
PKBGT returns to action next weekend on Saturday-Sunday, May 4-5 with the Wildcat Classic @ University Club of Kentucky (Wildcat Course) in Lexington, KY. The tournament brings together players from Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, and even Ontario, Canada! Despite being a small event, it should be a great tournament.
The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour is an initiative of the Triad Youth Golf Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation aimed at increasing learning and playing opportunities for youth golfers.
