On Sunday, April 14, the 2013 Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour completed the Wolfpack Classic at Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University. Lonnie Poole Golf Course, home of the NC State University Wolfpack men’s and women’s golf teams, is a tricky course for this two-day tournament. The event featured a field of 73 players and is a regional qualifier for the Callaway Junior World Championships.
The Bell Division featured high drama as 17 players entered the final round within 4 shots of the lead. The field featured 46 golfers, highlighted by eight of the top 500 players ranked nationally by Junior Golf Scoreboard. First round leaders Sarina Sonoda (Florence, SC 2016), Cecily Overbey (High Point, NC 2014) and Emilia Migliaccio (Cary, NC 2017), Catherine Ashworth (Fuquay-Varina, NC 2015) and Shannon Brooks (Vienna, VA 2015) entered the day at 5-under par. Brooks played the front nine at even-par to share the lead with Sabrina Long (Alpharetta, GA, 2015) who fired a 4-under par 30 to fall to 5-over for the Championship. Brooks finished strong with a 1-over par back nine to finish at 6-over par for the tournament. But, in the group in front, Anna Redding (Concord, NC 2015) had an amazing charge, birdieing 4 of the last 6 holes to finish with a 2-under par 70. Anna finished with a 78-70-148 for a 2-shot victory.
In the Futures Division, 3 extra holes were necessary to name our champion. Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, NC 2016) and Woo Wade (Dunwoody, GA 2019) battled to the 39th hole, with Wade making a solid-par on the 18th hole to claim the title. Wade finished the championship at 83-79-162.
Anna Redding (Concord, NC 2015) = Girls 15-17, Emilia Migliaccio (Cary, NC 2017) = Girls 13-14, and Woo Wade (Dunwoody, GA 2019) = Girls 11-12 received exemptions for the Callaway Junior World Qualifier in San Diego, CA.
PKBGT returns to action next weekend on Saturday-Sunday, April 20-21 with the Terrapin Classic @ University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park, MD. The tournament brings together players from DC, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and even Ontario, Canada!
The Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Golf Tour is an initiative of the Triad Youth Golf Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation aimed at increasing learning and playing opportunities for youth golfers. Based out of Greensboro, North Carolina, the PKBGT offers low cost, nationally ranked girls’ golf tournaments designed to prepare junior girls’ golfers for high school and collegiate golf. The PKBGT is the nation’s largest “girls’ only” junior tour with over 330 members in 2012, 137 alumni in the collegiate ranks and 29 National Letter of Intent signees for fall 2013.
